Butcher Block Countertops are:
Our most popular options are shown below. We can usually source any wood on request, just ask us!
Choose from Edge Grain, Face Grain, and End Grain.
Edge Grain is the most commonly used countertop construction style due to its durability and classic butcher block look.
Face Grain is constructed as wide planks glued together and is best suited for desk tops, vanity tops, or any surface with light use.
End Grain offers the most hardness and durability, and is typically used for accent areas. End grain is the best option for cutting directly on with a knife and is best finished with natural tung oil rather than the more permanent finishes.
All of our finishes are well-suited for use in kitchens and other wet areas. Contact us to discuss the pros and cons of each option in more detail.
-Hard Wax Oil (Rubio Monocoat 2C Oil) – Zero-VOC, food-safe, bio-based sealant which protects the grain while creating a durable and water resistant finish. Leaves a natural matte finish and you can still feel the wood grain through it. Requires occasional re-oiling as needed and can be spot-repaired. Our most popular finish and typically what we recommend for residential kitchen use.
-2K Polyurethane – Chemical, heat, and moisture resistant finish requiring no maintenance. Ideal for commercial applications. Has a slight sheen. Will require full refinishing if damaged.
-Waterlox – A tung oil formula mixed with hardening agents. Penetrates wood to make it water resistant. Requires occasional re-finishing as needed and can be spot-repaired. Has a slight sheen to glossy sheen depending on preference.
-Natural Tung Oil- the most natural and inexpensive choice, we use a tung oil mixed with a citrus solvent (it smells amazing!). Recommended for surfaces which will be used to cut directly on such as end grain butcher block and cutting boards. This finish will need to be maintained frequently, typically needing to be re-oiled weekly or more in the beginning to monthly over time. A great choice if you want the most natural option and don't mind regular upkeep to attain that.
