Butcher Block Construction Styles

Step 2: Choose Construction Style

Choose from Edge Grain, Face Grain, and End Grain.

Edge Grain is the most commonly used construction style due to its durability and classic butcher block look.

Face Grain is constructed as wide planks glued together and is best suited for desk tops, vanity tops, and work surfaces.

End Grain offers the most hardness and durability, and is typically used for accent areas.

Butcher block profiles

Step 3: Choose Edge Profile and Thickness

The standard butcher block thickness we use is 1.5", but any thickness is available.

We can also accommodate mitered frame edges or any custom edge profiles not shown to the right.

Step 4: Choose Finish

All of our finishes are well-suited for use in kitchens and other wet areas. Call us to discuss the pros and cons of each option in more detail.

-Hard Wax Oil (Rubio Monocoat 2C Oil) – Zero-VOC, food-safe, bio-based sealant which protects the grain while creating a durable and water resistant finish. Leaves the most natural looking matte finish of all options. Requires occasional re-oiling as needed.

-2K Polyurethane – Chemical, heat, and moisture resistant finish requiring no maintenance. Ideal for commercial applications. Has a slight sheen.

-Waterlox – Classic tung oil finish. Penetrates wood to make it water resistant. Requires occasional re-oiling as needed.
